Torres blancas.Madrid:
The architect Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oíza (1918-2000) wanted to build a building in height which grew organically over time, like a tree, assimilating the vertical paths (stairs, elevators) with tree woody glasses and the curved terraces grouped with the leaves of the branches. The 71 meter high building is located between nº2 Corazón de María street and 37 América Avenue and took 4 years to be built.
At first, two white concrete towers were going to be built but both budget problems and town hall’s opposition to build the 2nd tower ended up defining their current state. The inner body and exterior walls with reinforced concrete are the supporting structure. The perimeter is surrounded by cylinders with wooden lattices and the building is crowned by a meandering pool. |
